LG Display today showed off two new TV prototypes: an 18-inch flexible OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) panel that is flexible enough to be rolled up when not in use and another, a transparent panel that you could see objects behind the screen more clearly.
The 18-inc flexible OLED display, which has a resolution of 1200 by 810 with almost a million pixels, can be rolled up into a cylinder by a radius of 3cm. The TV can be rolled up with causing any damage to the functionality of the display in any way.
Now to make the OLED panel more flexible, LG says it did not use conventional plastic as the backplane of the panel, rather it used a high molecular substance-based polyimide film.
As regards the transparent display, the company said it can send signals 30 percent better than existing transparent LCD panels, with even clearer picture quality.
However, don't get your hopes up on seeing LG technologies in stores soon. "We are confident that by 2017, we will successfully develop an Ultra HD flexible and transparent OLED panel of more than 60 inches," In-Byung Kang, senior vice president and head of the R&D center at LG Display, said in a statement.
Cool tech though but why would I want a transparent TV for entertainment?
