It appears our readers are all for self-driving cars and can't wait for them to be the norm on the road. They are tired of the poor driving habits of other roads users. So many are even thinking of bringing these cars to our roads earlier than Google, Tesla,Mercedes.Audi etc. One question they asked us the most is ''is it possible to turn my car into a self-driving car by myself?'' Now I believe you understood what I meant by they can't wait soon enough to take their hands off the steering wheel.
Anyway, we may not be an expert in self-driving cars but we can provide answers to some of your questions. In other words, we will tell you what we know. So, to answer your question,Yes! You can turn your car into a self-driving one but it will depend on the kind of regular car. You will also need some things to make it drive on its own.
For example, if you own an Audi Q5 you will need to get the LIDaR system, that laser scanner spins on atop the car as seen on the Google Lexus RX450h in the picture above, cameras, GPS navigation system,a computer to store your data,Radar as well as other sensors etc. in order to convert it into a self-driving car. I think this is exactly what Google and automotive supplier Delphi did with their self-driving cars, the Lexus RX450h and the Audi Q5. The one that drove across 15 states in the United States some months back, from San Francisco to NewYork City, with no one taking control 99 percent of the driving. Remember the LIDaR system costs a whooping $70,000 alone. Wait don't close the page yet.
The software and hardware of self-driving cars are very expensive and I don't think they are available to you and I at the moment.Supposedly you did it yourself, you will need to get a license to show that it is safe to be tested on the streets.
