Today is the D day we all have been waiting for. Tesla version 7.0 software upgrade with Autopilot will begin rolling out to all Tesla Model S sedans and Model X SUVs worldwide, allowing them to drive themselves semi-autonomously while on the highways or freeways.Though you still need to keep your hands on the steering wheel, and there are some caveats.
Tesla Motors will today October 15th roll out its version 7.0 software update to its electric cars having the autopilot system. The latest software update will be sent to all Model S and X owners in America,Europe and Asia over-the-air(Wi-Fi) starting today. So owners don't have to drive all the way from their base to a Tesla centre to receive it. Customers in Europe and Asia will receive Tesla's latest software update next week.
However, Tesla says you have to pay a one-time fee of $2500 for the autopilot feature and is applicable only to Tesla electric vehicles manufactured on or after September 2014. They are the ones outfitted with ultrasonic sensors, radar, cameras and other self-driving technologies.
Like Nissan and Toyota, Tesla Model S and Model X electric vehicles with autopilot feature are semi autonomous. They are not fully autonomous yet---maybe in 2019. Your hands are required to be on the wheel at all times and pay attention. The EVs can change lanes, detect other vehicles that are near on both sides, stay in its lane and keep up with the car ahead but cannot brake or read traffic signs on its own just yet. In fact, you have just 10 seconds to take your hands off the wheel and relax while the car be in the driver's seat.
Elon Musk said more advanced and sophisticated features will come equipped with Tesla Version 7.1 software update. When it eventually arrives, it will give the car a large overhaul of the user interface, let you call your car from the garage and even looks for where parking space once you stepped out.
