Canadian Astronaut, Mr. Chris Hadfield showed us what life is like living aboard an orbiting research vessel. The Astronaut did an ''ask me anything'' session on Reddit right from the International Space Station. The discussion drew over 7500 questions and comments and was regarded as one of the coolest AMA in Reddit's history, that's according to the sit users(Redditors). The Astronaut took the time to answer their questions.
In order to reply to Redditors' questions, he logged on via satellite relay to a server in Houston, Texas. The connection speed was very slow--can't use it to watch videos) but he still managed to answer their questions. Trust Redditors, few minutes after the AMA session went live, the ones who are very much interested to learn more about living in Space, started picking his brains. He was asked so many questions, ranging from describing the smell of space, which Astronaut Hadfield said space smells like ''ozone or ''gun powder''. and others below.
A Redditor asked the Col. Hadfield which part of the earth look s coolest from space, the astronaut answered ''Australia looks coolest. The colours and textures of the Outback are severely artistic. The most beautiful to me are the Bahamas the vast glowing reefs of every shade of blue that exists.''
Astronauts living aboard the ISS have much privacy than you can imagine. No NSA or GCHQ spying there. The Canadian Astronaut says he has a small padded room called ''Sleep Station'' with a door completely private, like a bedroom without bed and the size of a phone-booth.That's where he does most of his typing.
Chris Hadfield is a human like us and had been put in the wrong foot before. For instance, during his 2nd spaceflight, while doing a live National TV news broadcast, he forgot the name of the space shuttle commander. Instead of calling Kent Rominger, he said Ken Cameron, the CDR of my 1st flight. Oops!
It might interest you to know that Col. Chris Hadfield was taught how to use Reddit by his son Evan, who also happens to be a Redditor. I believe he also convinced him to do the AMA. Thank you Evan!
Col. Hadfield says his scariest experience while on the ISS was when he watched a large Meteorite burn up between him and Australia, and the lump of rock almost randomly hurled into them.
Astronaut Chris Hadfield gave a piece of advice to anyone who wants to get into the field: Decide in your heart of hearts what really excites you and challenge you, and start moving your life in that direction. Every decision you make from what you eat to what you do with your time tonight, turns you into who you are tomorrow, and the day after. Look at who want to be, and sculpting yourself into that person. You may not get exactly where you thought you would be, but you will be doing things that suits you in a profession you believe in. Don't let life randomly kick you into the adult you don't want to be.
Mr. Chris Hadfield is the first Canadian to walk in space during his 2001 shuttle mission. He is also the first non-America/Russian to board the Russia Mir space station.
