Ride-hailing service Uber Technologies Inc does not want any surprises once its self-driving cars are out on the roads taking passengers to their destinations without them touching the steering wheel. It has reportedly employed the services of two vehicle security researchers who hacked into a moving jeep Cherokee.
In July Wired Magazine ran a story about the safety of autonomous vehicles and people riding in them, and that article went viral. Wired reported of two guys who found their way into highway cruizing Fiat Chrysler Jeep miles away via its entertainment systems. In the wake of the news, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles recalled a staggering 1.4 million vehicles to get them fixed and prevent further hack.
A month after the incident, the two security researchers, or hackers so to speak, are now part of the team conducting research on self-driving technology at Uber's Advanced Technologies Centre located in Pittsburgh. The duo of Chris Valasek and Charlier Miller, who were Twitter and IOActive employees, will start work by Tuesday, next week..
They will work side by side with Uber's security officer, Joe Sullivan and its Chief Information security officer,John Flynn ''to continue building out a world-class safety and security program at Uber.'' They have even called it quit at their respective companies.
