The Federal Government says it plans to connect 50 percent of the country's population to 3G mobile broadband services this year. To achieve this dream that many think may never materialized, the Federal government is aiming to complete Phase 1 of a wireless broadband infrastructure upgrade and expansion project, which is part of the National Broadband Plan (2013-2018), by year-end.
The plan was submitted by the Presidential Committee on Broadband to President Goodluck Jonathan in the second quarter of 2013. According to the committee, headed by former Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Ernest Ndukwe, 3G services would be powered by ubiquitous broadband facilities.
Apart from ensuring that all new mobile sites are LTE-compatible, the ICT Ministry will also articulate measures for complete digital dividend spectrum migration and release more spectrum for LTE through the NCC.
